Emerging research increasingly indicates that the U.S. water supply is widely contaminated with the endocrine disrupting chemical atrazine, but that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is taking almost no action on the threat.
Atrazine is an herbicide widely sprayed on corn fields in the Midwest, and one of the most widely detected groundwater contaminants in the country. According to an analysis of state and federal records by the Chicago Tribune, atrazine has been detected in the drinking water of a million people in 60 Illinois communities over the past four years. Yet the EPA requires testing for the chemical only four times a year, meaning that short-term spikes of the toxin go undetected — and unregulated. [...]

WILMINGTON, N.C. — North Carolina’s senior U.S. senator introduced a bill Tuesday calling for the Department of Veterans Affairs to provide health care to veterans and their relatives who were exposed to contaminated water at Camp Lejeune.

Sen. Richard Burr’s bill, “Caring for Camp Lejeune Veterans Act of 2009,” would grant care at a VA facility to any veteran or family member who was based at Camp Lejeune and suffers from adverse health effects. Burr’s office did not specify what kind of health problems, only that they are connected to exposure to contaminated water. Calls to the Department of Veterans Affairs were not returned. [...]

RALEIGH, N.C. (WSPA.com) – A North Carolina senator is calling for a congressional hearing about contaminated drinking water at a North Carolina Marine Corps base.
Democratic Sen. Kay Hagan said Tuesday that a new study of water at Camp Lejeune downplays effects on health and doesn’t take into account previous studies. The report released last week by the National Research Council said there is evidence people at the base were exposed to chemicals. But the report said there was no definite link to birth defects, cancer and other ailments suffered by people who lived and worked on base.
Hagan says former Lejeune personnel and residents “need closure on this issue.“ She is a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee and says she wants the committee to hold a hearing. [...]

Lighting water on fire sounds like a magic trick, but for some Fort Lupton residents who can perform it in their own kitchen sink, it’s not very entertaining.
Amee Ellsworth and her husband have spent the past five months hoping that their water, which is contaminated with natural gas, does not cause their home to explode. After learning of the Ellsworths’ bizarre concern, at least one more person living near Fort Lupton has discovered her home may be in the same situation. [...]

A boil water notice has been issued for Williamson areas near Trinity Health Care, where a water main broke, resulting in a loss of pressure. The water main break created a fountain this morning, spewing approximately 40-plus feet into the air. The people at Wilhelmena Drive, Sycamore, Airport Drive, East 7th Ave., and Valley View are urged to boil water before using it. [...]
